We end up with about 10 minutes of conditioning. I feel that you must have a variety of drills to use for conditioning. We have a coach that is in charge of conditioning. He is always thinking up different things to use for conditioning. This is not a fun part of practice, but we feel it is very important. We give our players one hour between practice sessions during the two-a-day sessions. They bring a sack lunch or something to eat between sessions. They go in after the morning session and take a shower.
We do a lot of running during the off-season. You stress to the kids that they must run as well as lift weights. We do not want athletes who are pumped up; we want athletes who have flexibility and athletes who can run. We feel that it is very important to use all of your coaches in the weight room. The way we do it is to split it up. I have an assistant coach who runs the weight program on Monday and another coach who takes it on Wednesday, and I take the Thursday workout.
